Ms. Curtis' 4th Grade Class

My name is Rachel Curtis.  I am a 4th-grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary School.  I believe in helping students grow into becoming life-long learners and kind citizens. I want students to feel welcomed, calm, and safe in my classroom, allowing them to focus on growing.

Curriculum

In Scottsbluff School District we use Great Minds' Wit and Wisdom curriculum to teach English Language Arts.  In this curriculum, students investigate themes using multiple books, artwork, and writing to have a deeper understanding of standards and ideas.

In the first quarter, we learn about what makes a literal and figurative great heart. Then in the second quarter students investigate extreme settings.  Students then dive into the American Revolution to discover there are multiple sides to a story in our third quarter.   Finally, in the third quarter students study myths and legends.

Classroom

My classroom is plant-themed with cool tones to create a calm feeling.  I have many plants that call this classroom home including succulents, air plants,  and others.  Plants help create clean air in the classroom and continue to provide that calm feeling. Blinds are usually open to allow natural light into the classroom.   I also try my best to ensure that the classroom remains uncluttered to allow students' minds to do the same.

In Scottsbluff School District we use Bridges Math.  This curriculum is engaging, rigorous, and accessible for all learners.
